| Customer Reviews: Too good to be true April 16, 2010 Ernie (Greenwich, CT United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Looking around the web, these speakers were reviewed in a few places as "a good value". They are not.
The product:
The cones are VERY shallow for the mounting depth (they mount as deep as other 6", but not as much surface area inside) and the bass is questionable at best. The crossover cuts off both highs and lows (the 2db boost does do just that, but with the truncated frequencies) and even with good speakers you can tell that something is being 'filtered' rather than just split.
The concept:
We've all had it drilled into our heads that component is better than 2-ways or even 3-ways. Additionally, most people now know to check frequency range, power rating, peak power and sensitivity. What is not spoken of is actually build quality, which is something you just can't measure.
The comparisons:
Alpine SPS-170a
Alpine SPS-17c2
Alpine SPS-600
Pioneer . . . something old I had lying around
At 50watts RMS, even the SPS-600 speakers sounded clearer (if you check the specs, these have the lowest sensitivity and a higher power rating -- typically don't sound very good at lower power).
Conclusion:
Don't get components just to "fill an area" -- at (or below) this price point, find a set of Pioneer/Alpine/Kenwood 2-ways.

At the price I got them for they were a steal. Decent quality and sound especially for component speakers.
